Happy Houses
2020 - 2021
Inspired by the nickname given to the run-down rental house my mother’s family moved to after her parent’s divorce, these paintings upend expectations of home, shelter, and safety through the lens of intergenerational trauma, childhood memories, and dreams.
I interviewed my mother about her childhood in anticipation of turning her reflections into a larger audio-visual project. Due to the pandemic and loss of income, that project never materialized, but a small excerpt of edited audio, in which I speak my mother’s words in her place, is located below.
