AI Canaries

A series of AI generated ‘canaries,’ captioned by another AI trained to on texts about resuscitation, CPR, and air-related social and environmental issues - printed on mirrored glass. In response to the question, “who are our contemporary ‘canaries in the coal mine,’” these distorted, ‘failed’ reproductions point to who and what are rendered ‘wrong’ by the system manufacturing their representation.

BELOW: this video shows 24fps of the AI’s generated canaries - showing a little bit of the diversity in its output. Most of the canaries are shown on some kind of “perch,” many have cage bars in the background, and none of them are in flight, due to the kinds of images of canaries available online - mostly of pet canaries.
